The current academic debates surrounding the concept of the Middle Ages in Ethiopia and Eritrea offer a timely opportunity to reassess the periodizations proposed for this region's history. Nevertheless, recent trends in scholarship have led to a neglect of essential phases in the evolution of historical studies. Notably, the surge in studies on Late Antiquity has had a marginal impact on the exploration of the Ethiopian past. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of this historical period, it is essential to refine the existing research and incorporate a more nuanced examination of the cultural, social, and economic dynamics that shaped the Middle Ages in these regions. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of this era and its lasting impact on the modern world.
