Malaysian Chinese leader and the President of the United Chinese Association of Kuala Lumpur, Tan Sri Wong Sze Pheng, has called on the Selangor State Government to uphold the spirit of the Federal Constitution and respect the multicultural values and religious freedom of non-Muslim communities. This includes giving fair and reasonable treatment to non-Muslim social and cultural activities. According to Wong, the recent move by the Petaling Jaya City Council to prohibit a female singer from performing at a temple event to worship gods during the God's Birthday Celebration is inconsistent and raises eyebrows. Wong believes that the Selangor Government and the city council's inconsistent and unclear handling of entertainment guidelines or laws is unacceptable. He emphasized that the event was clearly non-Muslim and did not involve any Muslim participation, and therefore, there is no need for prior interference or post-facto relaxation of laws. Wong stressed that under the Federal Constitution, all races have the right to practice, propagate, and observe their religious beliefs and that the Selangor Government or city council should not impose policies that are discriminatory or seek to convert non-Muslims to Islam. Wong also expressed hope that the government and related authorities would take the same care in similar incidents and ensuring that such events do not recur.
