I recently set up a US-based Outlook account and was intrigued by the options available for purchasing a subscription. When I visited the Microsoft Office 365 website, I noticed a significant difference in the pricing for the same subscription. If I opted for the US English version, the annual fee was $69.90. However, if I chose the Chinese version, the annual fee was 400 CNY. This disparity raised a few questions in my mind. If I were to purchase a subscription in USD, would my data be transferred out of the mainland? Given that the currency conversion would result in a price increase of around 100 CNY, I found this discrepancy rather puzzling. As it turns out, Microsoft considers the account region when determining the subscription plan, which was a relief. However, it also made me realize that I can purchase a subscription for a different region, including China, despite setting my account to a US location. This ambiguity left me feeling confused.
