Russia's telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has banned the messaging app Viber, citing its failure to comply with regulations aimed at preventing terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking. This decision comes after Mikhail Dubinsky, the founder and CEO of Viber's parent company Rakuten Group, had previously stated that Viber would use its platform to counter Russian misinformation and propaganda.

The ban has sparked concerns over freedom of expression and the shrinking of online spaces in Russia.
