According to Reuters, the Republic of Congo has filed criminal complaints against Apple, accusing the company of using 'tainted' minerals. The allegations suggest that the corporation is using resources sourced from artisanal mines, where labor conditions are akin to slavery.
The conflict minerals in question are tin, tantalum, and tungsten, which are crucial for electronics. Some of these mines are controlled by criminal groups that sponsor violence and looting.
Apple has refuted the allegations, stating that it only works with verified suppliers, conducts audits, and supports initiatives to track the origin of its materials. However, lawyers from Congo believe that this is merely a 'smoke screen'.
The court proceedings will take place in France and Belgium. If the allegations are confirmed, it will not only damage Apple's reputation but also expose a larger industry for turning a blind eye to the origin of its materials.
