The UK government is planning to introduce a new law that will mandate device manufacturers to ensure that users can easily delete their personal data before selling or disposing of their devices. The proposed legislation is an amendment to the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill.
The legislation primarily targets connected devices with data storage and processing capabilities, including smart speakers, security cameras, and other smart devices. Manufacturers will be required to provide clear and simple data deletion instructions, with the deletion process made easily executable. Companies that fail to comply may face penalties of up to £10 million or 4% of their global turnover.
