The American federal corporation TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) has approved the allocation of 150 MW of power for Elon Musk's xAI supercomputer, Colossus, allowing the utilization of all 100,000 Nvidia accelerators. Previously, the power needs were not sufficient, requiring 8 MW in July 2024, which was later increased to 50 MW. However, a full deployment of all components requires 155 MW.
Following discussions with local authorities, including Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW), who were concerned about the high energy consumption, it was agreed that the new allocation would not impact the region's power grid stability. In case of necessity, TVA will provide additional power.
Large technology companies, such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, are also investing in alternative energy sources, including nuclear energy, to meet their needs for energy for AI. However, such solutions are unlikely to emerge before five years.
