Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio has once again criticized the Marcos government for its alleged failure to provide funding for a flood control project in Davao City, which she claimed was due to the city's mayor being a member of the Duterte family. Duterte-Carpio stated on her social media platforms that she is utilizing her 'position, resources, and platform' to demonstrate how to issue orders to government officials. She recalled requesting her engineer's office and the Public Works and Highways Department to study flood problems during her term as Davao City mayor, leading to her father drafting a comprehensive flood control plan. Senate President Tito Sotto, on the other hand, responded to Duterte-Carpio's statement, saying that her words are 'perplexing', as previous President Rodrigo Duterte had six years to draft a flood control plan but failed to do so. Sotto pointed out that flood issues have been long-standing and that the previous government had the opportunity to resolve them. He stated that the Vice President has the right to point out problems but can use her position and resources to propose recommendations or take action. Duterte-Carpio also questioned whether the government is hesitant to fund the project due to the city mayor being a member of her family. She mentioned that a 2018 report had criticized the Duterte government's investment in flood control projects as 'excessive', while a 2013 audit committee report had found that Davao City's efficiency in using funds for flood and disaster control projects was low. Finally, Duterte-Carpio asked, 'Perhaps the government now wants to support infrastructure projects that align with the comprehensive plan, but are they hesitant because of the Duterte family connection?'
