A recent study published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Technology found that many smartwatch strap bands contain high levels of 'forever chemicals' - specifically perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a type of persistent and bioaccumulative fluorinated and polyfluorinated compound (PFAS). These chemicals are not easily broken down and can have severe health effects, including cancer, high blood pressure, and infertility.
The study analyzed 22 different brands and price points of smartwatch strap bands and found that PFHxA was the most common compound, with concentrations significantly higher than those found in other everyday consumer products.
According to the researchers, these strap bands may pose a greater risk of chemical absorption and transfer when worn during exercise or when the skin is more alkaline. However, they emphasize that these chemicals are not necessary components and that consumers can choose to opt for PFAS-free strap bands to avoid the risks.
This study highlights the need for greater regulation and transparency in the industry, as well as increased awareness among consumers about the potential risks associated with some smartwatch strap bands.
