The FDA has elevated the recall of chicken eggs sold by Costco to the highest risk level, citing a serious salmonella outbreak. The recall, which was first announced last month, affects around 108,000 cartons of eggs sold at 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The eggs, which were produced by Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based organic egg supplier, were sold under the Costco brand Kirkland Signature. The affected eggs have a Julian code of 327 and a best-by date of January 6, 2025.

So far, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recall. However, salmonella can cause serious infections, particularly in children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

Consumers who purchased the recalled eggs are advised to discard them or stop using them and return them to Costco for a full refund. This recall is separate from a previous recall of chicken eggs sold by Milo's Poultry Farms, which was linked to a salmonella outbreak in 12 states that affected 93 people, including 34 who were hospitalized.
