The National Assembly of South Korea on Friday afternoon, December 27, held a plenary session to vote on the impeachment motion against Acting President Han Duck-soo. This is the first time in Korean history that an acting president has been impeached.

The impeachment motion was put to a vote at around 3 pm local time, and 192 out of 300 lawmakers voted in favor of it, thus passing the motion.

According to the constitution, the president is only a ceremonial figure and the power to appoint three constitutional court judges is only a formality. Therefore, Acting President Han Duck-soo had no authority to refuse the appointments.

As a result, Deputy Prime Minister Choo Gye-hyun will continue to act as the president.
