China's Ministry of Commerce has announced the initiation of an investigation into imported beef effective immediately. This move follows an application by the China Animal Husbandry Association, which cited a sharp increase in imported beef over the past few years, severely affecting the domestic industry.

According to data, beef imports into China grew by 65% between 2019 and 2023, with the first half of 2023 seeing imports more than double those of the same period in 2019. This surge in imports led to plummeting domestic beef prices, resulting in losses for producers.

The investigation covers the period from January 1, 2019, to June 30, 2024, and will last for approximately eight months.
