Apple's recent update to iOS 18 has introduced Enhanced Visual Search (EVS), an upgraded version of the Visual Look Up feature. By default, EVS is enabled, which means that Apple will share user photos to enhance search results. This is done through a global index that uses computer vision algorithms to identify landmarks and points of interest, making it easier for users to find photos.
Although Apple employs techniques such as homomorphic encryption and differential privacy to protect user data, the default sharing setting has raised concerns about user privacy. Developer Jeff Johnson has criticized Apple for enabling the feature without obtaining user consent, highlighting the potential risks.
Fortunately, users can manually disable the feature in the Photos app settings.
