AMD has recently opened up a module for the Linux kernel called GIM (GPU-IOV Module) that enables GPU virtualization on AMD devices that support SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization). This technology allows multiple virtual machines to share the resources of a single physical device, significantly boosting performance. The GIM module is compatible with KVM-based virtualization systems and provides features such as GPU-IOV initialization, virtual function configuration, resource allocation planning, dependency detection, and function-level reset (FLR). This innovative technology has the potential to revolutionize the way virtual machines interact with physical devices, enabling more efficient and flexible resource utilization. The GIM module is now available for Ubuntu 22.04, and its release marks an exciting step forward in the development of GPU virtualization for Linux.
