EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned Chinese President Xi Jinping that the two countries' relationship is at a 'turning point' as trade and Ukraine tensions escalate. Von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa met with Xi in Beijing for a one-day meeting, calling for 'genuine solutions' to long-standing issues, including China's massive trade surplus with the EU and its support for Moscow. According to a prepared speech, von der Leyen told Xi: 'As our cooperation deepens, imbalances are decreasing. We have reached a turning point.' She added: 'Rebalancing our bilateral relationship is no longer a matter of choice, but a necessity.' Xi responded by saying that China and the EU can create an 'upgraded' export control dialogue mechanism to ensure stable supply chains, and that the two sides should 'stick to dialogue and consultation to properly handle differences and frictions.'
