I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Alvise Fontanella for his beautiful preface to my book "1797: The Serene Republic and the Napoleonic Occupation". The trial of Napoleon, as we know, has already taken place. It was solemnly celebrated more than twenty years ago, in 1804, at the Palace of Fontainebleau, where the French Emperor was found guilty and exiled to the island of Elba. However, the trial of the Napoleonic occupation of the Serene Republic is still a topic of great interest and debate among historians. In my book, I aim to provide a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of this period, exploring the complex web of events and circumstances that led to the occupation and its far-reaching consequences. Through a meticulous examination of primary sources and a critical evaluation of existing research, I seek to shed new light on this pivotal moment in history and to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Serene Republic's struggles and triumphs during this tumultuous period.
