Electronic Arts (EA) is reportedly forcing its approximately 15,000 employees to use artificial intelligence (AI) in almost all their work, including generating code, concept art, and managing suggestions. However, the AI tools used for code generation have been plagued with issues, often producing defective code that requires manual repair, thereby increasing the workload of developers. Furthermore, the widespread use of AI also poses a threat to quality assurance positions. A former Respawn employee revealed that around 100 employees were laid off in the spring due to the company's decision to use AI to review and summarize player feedback. Despite this, industry professionals such as Hideki Kamiya, creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, and Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, remain optimistic about the potential of generative AI to boost efficiency. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the use of AI is likely to become more prevalent, raising concerns about the impact on employment and the quality of work. The question remains whether the benefits of AI adoption will outweigh the costs, and whether employees will be able to adapt to the changing landscape.
