As his presidency draws to a close, Indonesian President Joko Widodo publicly apologized for his past mistakes. Social observers and analysts have consistently criticized Widodo's administration for weakening the country's democratic values and principles over the past decade. During an independent month prayer event, Widodo expressed regret to an audience of around 3,000 people, including cabinet members, religious leaders, and Islamic organization leaders. His apology was also broadcast live on major news television channels and online platforms. Widodo's voice trembled as he apologized for the shortcomings of his administration during his 10 years in office, saying, "Please permit me and Ma'ruf to express our sincere apologies for any mistakes we may have made during our time as president and vice president." Widodo further clarified that he is not perfect and that only God is perfect. Upon taking office, Widodo, a grassroots leader, promised to reform the country's political system, which was dominated by political dynasties and military elites. He focused on building infrastructure and attracting foreign investment, earning significant support from the people. However, during his tenure, the government frequently used coercion against critics and political opponents, with parties facing targeted interference, members of the ruling coalition being prosecuted, and public participation in state governance and legislation decreasing. Universitas Indonesia election law lecturer Titi said, "In the final stretch of his presidency, Widodo's administration has gradually weakened its commitment to democratic values and governance principles." Widodo has also been accused of attempting to establish a political dynasty, with his son Gibran becoming the running mate of Prabowo Subianto in the 2019 presidential election and subsequently succeeding him as president. Widodo's daughter-in-law, Bobi, has announced her intention to run for governor of North Sumatra, while his youngest son, Kasdan, joined the National Mandate Party shortly after and took over as party leader.
