Head of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati convened a meeting with the Agency for the Operation of Weather Modification (OMC) and the Unit for the Implementation of Technical Activities (UPT) in East Kalimantan to discuss the coordination and implementation of OMC operations for the development of the new capital city of Nusantara. During the meeting, Dwikorita emphasized the need to optimize OMC operations as there is a high potential for heavy rain (above 70%) in the area of Nusantara on July 15, 16, 18, and 19, 2024, and moderate potential (50-70%) on July 13, 14, 17, and 20, 2024. This could hinder the development of the new capital city. Although most of Indonesia is currently experiencing a dry season, the BMKG has observed recent phenomena in the Indian Ocean that may impact rain formation in western Indonesia. The OMC operation is one of the agency's efforts to modify the weather to support the development of Nusantara. The meeting, held in Samarinda, was attended by Deputy Meteorologist Guswanto, Deputy Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency Tri Handoko Seto, and representatives from Aji Pangeran Tempenggung Pranoto Airport, AirNav Samarinda, and Smart Aviation. Guswanto visited the OMC Balikpapan post to ensure readiness and smooth operations on July 20 in Balikpapan. Guswanto and the OMC team, along with UPT Kalimantan Timur, will continue to monitor and evaluate OMC operations on a regular basis to ensure their effectiveness. Dwikorita hopes that coordination and synergy between BMKG, Aji Pangeran Tempenggung Pranoto Airport, AirNav Samarinda, Smart Aviation, and other related parties will be further improved to ensure the smooth development of the new capital city of Nusantara.
